Semaglutide (semA GLOO tide) is a medication that promotes weight loss and may also be used to maintain weight loss. Its mechanism of action involves decreasing appetite, which is often complemented by changes in diet and exercise.

How should you use this medication?

The medication to be administered is a weekly injection given under the skin. The patient will be instructed on how to prepare and administer the injection according to the prescription label instructions. The medication is administered once every week, or every 7 days. The patient must continue taking the medication unless advised by their care team to stop. It is crucial that used needles and pens are placed in a designated sharps container and not disposed of in a trash can. If the patient does not have a sharps container, they should contact their pharmacist or care team for assistance. A MedGuide will be provided with each prescription refill, containing important information regarding the use of the medication. It is essential that the patient reads this information carefully each time it is provided.

The patient should also consult their pharmacist for directions on how to properly use the medication, as well as any questions they may have. Additionally, the patient should discuss the use of this medication with their care team, including any concerns about its use in children. While the medication may be prescribed for children as young as 12 years for selected conditions, certain precautions apply.

What are the possible side effects of this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your care team as soon as possible:

• Allergic reactions--skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• Change in vision
• Dehydration--increased thirst, dry mouth, feeling faint or lightheaded, headache, dark yellow or brown urine
• Gallbladder problems--severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, fever
• Heart palpitations--rapid, pounding, or irregular heartbeat
• Kidney injury--decrease in the amount of urine, swelling of the ankles, hands, or feet
• Pancreatitis--severe stomach pain that spreads to your back or gets worse after eating or when touched, fever, nausea, vomiting
• Thoughts of suicide or self-harm, worsening mood, feelings of depression
• Thyroid cancer--new mass or lump in the neck, pain or trouble swallowing, trouble breathing, hoarseness Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your care team if they continue or are bothersome):
• Diarrhea
• Loss of appetite
• Nausea
• Stomach pain
• Vomiting
