Nefiracetam is a novel pyrrolidone-type nootropic agent, and it has been reported to possess a potential for antiepileptic therapy as well as cognition-enhancing effects. Nefiracetam appears to have a more far-reaching effect over the mechanisms of cognition and memory than either Aniracetam or Pramiracetam. While it shares many of Piracetam’s effects on the brain, it has two main unique advantages that Piracetam does not have:
1. Being fat soluble it has far better penetration into the brain through the blood brain barrier and is longer lasting.
2. It is a potent stimulator of the brain’s Glutamate AMPA (alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid) receptors.
AMPA receptor research is considered an exciting development in the nootropic field and such compounds that affect AMPA receptors are called Ampakines. These compounds are a new class of compounds that are known to enhance alertness and attention span, and facilitate learning and memory. The parent compound in which the AMPA modulating activity was first characterized was the well-known nootropic drug aniracetam.
